How to make a chelada

The good folks at Crown Imports sent me this recipe for chelada. It's a simple but refreshing drink.

Crown handles the US imports of the Grupo Modelo line which includes brands like Corona Extra, Corona Light, Modelo Especial and Pacifico. This recipe includes a light lager so, for an authentically Mexican chelada, you can use any of these brands.

While any light lager style will do, as always, I encourage you to seek out a locally brewed beer and try it alongside or instead of nationally distributed beer.

Prep Time: 3 minutes

Total Time: 3 minutes

Yield: 1 chelada


  • Coarse salt
  • Ice
  • Juice from one large lime
  • 1 12 oz. bottle light lager (that's light in color and flavor, not necessarily a low-cal beer.)
  • Lime wedge for garnish


Salt the rim of a large, tall glass. Fill with ice and add the lime juice. Top up with the beer. Garnish with the lime wedge.

Odds are you won't empty the bottle so reserve what's left and keep adding as you drink it or just make a second chelada.
