Avery Brewing Company Mephistopheles Stout

The Bottom Line

Avery's Mephistopheles Stout is a seasonal November release. From the website:
"Mephistopheles is the crafty shape shifter, the second fallen angel. Amazingly complex, coal black, velvety and liqueurish, this demon has a bouquet of vine-ripened grapes, anise and chocolate covered cherries with flavors of rum-soaked caramelized dark fruits and a double espresso finish."

Pros

  • Rich, full flavors
  • Complex

Cons

  • The taste of the 16% alcohol is distracting

Description

  • Autumn seasonal
  • 107 IBU
  • 16% ABV

Guide Review - Tasting Notes and Review of Avery Brewing Company's Mephistopheles Stout

Mephistopheles pours with a medium brown head, the color of chocolate milk. The beer is black, black, black with no light seeping through. The nose is full of dark, sweet hints of dried prunes and spice. The alcohol is very apparent on the tongue, stinging and warming as it slides down the throat. The rich sweet flavors in nose spread out in the mouth and act as a balance to the alcohol. At the end of the drink a hoppiness begins to assert itself then settles on the tongue where it mingles with the sweetness for a long finish. This is a beer to enjoy very slowly.
