New Belgium Saison Harvest Ale - Beer Panel Review of New Belgium Saison

From Autumn Beer Tasting Panel '06

Guide Rating - rating

The Bottom Line

I found this beer to be a perfectly enjoyable interpretation of the style. As such it has some sour notes that really split the panel. While some truly enjoyed it, others absolutely hated it. But when the votes were counted New Belgium Saison Harvest Ale beat Schlafly Saision Ale for this style.

Guide Review - New Belgium Saison Harvest Ale - Beer Panel Review of New Belgium Saison

About the only thing that the panel could agree on with this beer was the color - light amber to golden. The nose split the panel, though. Some couldn't detect any aroma at all while those that did caught hints of musk, peanut butter, malt and in one case urine. This taster also felt that the flavor was just plain "horrible." Others agreed noting mediciny, sour, and burnt flavors. Those that enjoyed it had an even tougher time describing the flavor. They reported earthy notes as well as malt, nuts and even coffee.
