North Korean Beer
Friday July 3, 2009
I have to admit I’d never really considered the existence of a beer in North Korea. But there is at least one and apparently it has been brewing since 2002.
Taedonggang beer is in the news today because a TV commercial for it recently launched. The unusual bit of capitalism from everyone’s favorite communist holdout calls the beer the “Pride of Pyongyang” and says that the beer will become a familiar part of the lives of North Koreans.
I checked youtube to see if the ad had been posted there. It hadn’t. But I did find this short little documentary – made inadvertently hilarious by some incongruous background music – that features quite a few shots of the brewery operation.

I have seen some cheesy beer adverts in my lifetime but I think this one takes the cake!
That would be even funnier with some creative subtitles! My favorite was the bar scene at the beginning. No flat screen TVs, no coasters, no beer nuts. Just four guys in suits per table guzzling one glass each. I wonder how many police there were off camera ready to club guys who didn’t look like they were enjoying themselves?
