Beer for Our Soldiers
Wednesday December 31, 2008
US soldiers based in Iraq have to do without beer. When I first learned this I was a little surprised...OK, a lot surprised. My first beer (and the one after that) was bought on a US Army base in Hanau, Germany and I've always associated the Army and beer. Of course when they're on duty they don't drink but I don't know of too many soldiers who don't enjoy a cold one at quitting time.
But circumstances are different over there. Soldiers aren't allowed to drink any sort of alcohol while in Iraq. So the news that some of them will soon be allowed a couple of brews must be welcome indeed. Members of the Multi-National Division–Baghdad will be able to have two beers during the upcoming Super Bowl. Not all will be taking part, pointing out that combat troops can be called to action at anytime.
Of course I have to wonder what kind of beer it will be but that hardly matters. Any beer after months no beer or, worse, near-beer would be a beautiful thing indeed.

There are going to be a lot of very happy and grateful soldiers this Super Bowl season!
Is there still Lemp beer around?
Lemp beer is available. You can learn more about it at http://www.lemplager.com.
Sweet! I didn’t know that was your first beer.
Indeed it was, dear sister. It was a hefeweizen with a slice of lemon served in a style-correct glass; a Paulaner if I remember correctly. It was followed by many, many Henninger Pils over the next few months.
