What’s Not in Anchor’s Christmas Ale
Wednesday November 26, 2008
Picking up a sixer or two of Anchor’s Christmas Ale is one of the highlights of the season for me. It is artfully brewed and spiced to perfection. It’s also incredibly intriguing because Anchor has never said what spices are used.
This year I have at least one clue. I’m finishing up Don Russel’s Christmas Beer book. In it he quotes Fritz Maytag, the top man at Anchor, on one aspect of the spice blend. Regarding cloves Maytag says “No! That’s the only thing I’m going to say. There are no cloves in it. None. I’m tired of hearing about cloves!”
So, there aren’t any cloves in it. But what spices ARE in it? This is going to take a lot of research!

I’m dying to know what kind of tree they used this year! Forget the spices …
