Google Ranks Beer with Wine

Thursday November 6, 2008
It's a common complaint amongst beer people - beer gets no respect.

Beer's reputation constantly shifts throughout history. In Bavarian wheat beer was once considered to be the drink of nobility. In early American history beer was seen as the drink of moderation and lager was officially classified as a non-intoxicating beverage. But in modern times beer has almost universally been seen as lower-class booze; what people drink who can't afford or don't have the taste to drink a better drink.

The craft beer revolution has done a lot to change this but the reputation persists. So, while Google has for a long time allowed advertisers to target keywords related to wine and champagne the Internet marketing giant has disallowed keywords related to beer. Whether because of tightening economic times or a more enlightened view of beer Google announced this week that they would lift their prohibition on beery terms.

A momentous change? Not really. The average web surfer will likely not even notice but its one more little step towards more respect for beer.

Those who look down their noses at beer are just underexposed to the finer craft brews. Not every beer comes from a six-pack, for Pete’s sake.
