Fighting for British Pubs

Wednesday October 22, 2008
British Pub
Pubs continue to close in the UK as big stores continue to sell beer for just a few pennies a can. There have been cries from pub owners, pub chains, CAMRA, beer writers and various professional beer organizations that someone do something. Now some members of Parliament have joined the chorus.

The All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group has issued a 44 page report and passed it around to all MPs. With a lot of specific recommendations such as reducing duties and taxes and eliminating red tape the report basically seeks to make life easier and a little more affordable. The goal is to the slow the rate of pub closures which right now is being clocked at 36 per week.

I wish them well. Things have been grim for British pubs for a while now and the recent economic downturn is not going to help.
