Impressed with Anheuser-Busch
Sunday September 7, 2008
I recently tried three beers that are making me question my opinion of Anheuser-Busch.
Budweiser American Ale – This was my second time to try this new beer. Back in May I attended the St. Louis Brewers Heritage festival where I got to try the ale. We were told that the samples we were given weren’t necessarily the final recipe – the brewers still wanted to tinker. Well, it appears that they’ve had a very productive summer. By ratcheting up the hops profile they turned a not very interesting sweet brew into a very nice, well balanced ale.
Michelob Dunkel Weisse – The sweet wheats from Bavaria aren’t really my favorite beer styles although I do occasionally enjoy one, especially with a spicy meal. Michelob’s dark wheat is a nice interpretation of the style and worth a taste.
Michelob Pale Ale – This is the beer that really impressed me. Not only are the hops apparent as with the latest of Bud American Ale I tried, but they dominate. An Anheuser-Busch beer that I can actually call hoppy is a new thing to me and I like it. Now, this isn’t going to become my favorite pale ale. I’m just saying that it is certainly worth checking out and there’s a decent chance that I’ll buy a six pack for myself sometime.

The Pale Ale was my favorite of the three as well, Bryce. And I’m no big fan of pale ales in general. Like you, all three of these beers impressed me to some degree. I’d like to take these beers and do a blind test with a A-B bashing beer geek and watch their face turn red when they pick one of these over a comparable craft beer. I’m just mean that way.
