Bartering for Pints
Thursday August 14, 2008
The Pigs public house near Holt in England has been willing to barter for a couple of years now. Chloe Wassey along with her business partner and head chef Tim Abbot have exchanged fresh produce, farm animals and game for beer.
The sign in the pub explains it this way: "If you grow, breed, shoot or steal anything that may look at home on our menu, bring it in and let's do a deal."
Although the sign has been up for a while they’ve noticed an uptick in the bartering business since the credit crunch settled in on the local economy. Once the goods offered are found to meet the The Pigs’s standards they are exchanged for meals or vouchers.
So what does a beer go for? A kilo of potatoes, three whole mackerel and a kilo of fresh fruit have all earned a pint.
