Japanese Beer
Thursday January 3, 2008
When it comes to craft beer Japan might not be the first country that comes to mind. There are some popular lagers that come out of Japan including Sapporo and Asahi but can you name a good Japanese stout…or any ale for that matter?
The Japanese craft beer market was examined in a nice piece that appeared in the LA Times recently. It explained that until 1994, brewers had to produce half a million gallons of beer before they could be licensed. Now that the law has changed the craft beer market has been growing but this isn’t something that can happen overnight.
The article focuses on the two craft brewers, Hitachino and Echigo, which are both exported to the US. There is also a companion piece with tasting notes for some of these brewers’ beers.
