The World Series of Beer Pong
Thursday November 1, 2007
The game is simple. Opponents stand on opposite ends of a table and try to throw ping-pong balls into cups of beer. That’s really about it. The winner, obviously, is the one that sinks the most number of balls. There are rules but they tend to be different from game to game and are constantly evolving.
Even a cursory look at this game reveals that the beer is hardly vital. The cups are typically plastic and, so the argument goes, the beer is important to stabilize them but really any liquid or even sand or rocks would do. Heavy cups would also be an option. But without the beer would it really be as fun?
Personally I like to drink my beer and this is why it’s taken me so long to mention beer pong. But with the World Series of Beer Pong in Las Vegas just eight weeks away and a $50,000 prize for the winner I really can’t ignore this sport any longer. It may not be featured in the Olympics anytime soon but beer pong is apparently here to stay.
