Greenpeace VS. Anheuser-Busch

Friday October 12, 2007
Greenpeace is taking AB to task over some genetically engineered rice that is apparently being used in the beer they brew. This is despite an earlier commitment from AB to stop using the rice in the beer they brew for export, according to Greenpeace's press release. The beer still brewed with the GE rice is for US consumption only.

What's the problem with genetically engineered food? I really have no idea. Those opposed to it say that it's largely untested and its long term effects on human and animal health are unknown and it can have a negative impact on biodiversity. Those in favor of it say, "Nuh-uh!"

My concern is the beer itself. If you find this news startling then I have to ask why are you still drinking beer with rice in it? Have I taught you nothing? Rice in beer does two things - it creates less flavor and more alcohol. If that's what you're looking for then drink vodka.

Good beer is made with barley and no adjuncts like corn or rice. If you want to drink beer with flavor and character then don't drink beers brewed with these grains. And now you'll have the added benefit of not having to worry about genetically engineered rice in your brew.

Yes, you do get to the heart of the matter; why drink watery alcohol when you can drink real beer!
