My Top Ten Beers Every Beer Lover Should Know list has raised the passions, and in some cases the ire, of About Beer readers and I thought that I’d share some of the response. One note before we jump into it. I chose the beers on this list for reasons other than they are my favorites, though most are. I chose them based on wide availability and how well they represent their respective styles.

One reader insists that I add Belhaven to the list. I haven’t seen Belhaven available in my area for quite some time. I did have a bottle once years ago and I do remember it fondly although I have to admit I can’t remember what style it was.

Another reader wrote to declare Bells Oberon is the best beer ever. I’m a huge fan of Bells and I was sorely tempted to add them to my list. I didn’t because their distribution is so limited that many readers wouldn’t have a chance to try them. If I ever have the gall to publish a list of top ten personal favorite beers or breweries list I’m sure that Bells will be on it.

I received vociferous support for Yuengling Traditional Lager, Shiner Bock, St. Pauli Girl Special Dark and EKU.

I also received an impassioned email regarding my exclusion of Anhueser-Busch.

This is one of the great things about beer. Beer engenders passion. Every style and every brewery has produced loyal supports that are quick and willing to defend their favorite brew.
